Branches of Engineering

Engineering is an occupation and field of study that is vital to the growth of modern society, and yet it has only existed for thousands of years, evolving from simplistic mechanisms such as the wheel, and the pulley, into complex machines and systems. The field is remarkably broad, essentially applying scientific knowledge to improve systems, processes, machines, tools, structures, organizations, etc. At the core, an engineer can be described as a problem-solver, innovative, inventor, researcher, and dreamer. The engineer is someone who creates solutions to problems found in every aspect of human life through technological innovation.

Since ancient times, engineering has been involved in the civil and military disciplines. The architecture of the Pyramids in Ancient Egypt, the war machines of the Ancient Roman and Chinese empires, and the mechanical inventions of Ancient Greece are some of the foundational concepts of modern engineering. Even though the term ‘engine’ has existed since ancient times, ‘engineer’ can be traced back to the late 1300s, meaning someone who operates an engine. While the modern field can be broken down into the four main branches of mechanical, electrical, civil and chemical engineering; there are many subdisciplines and interdisciplinary fields which specialize in particular areas under these branches and because of the vast range of disciplines, engineers often specialize in particular areas.
